Deep Fryers
Deep frying is cooking food through submersing it in hot oil at temperatures of about 160 degrees C – 190oC. The food then gets the deep fried quality which is soft and moist on the inside but crisp on the outside. In order to do this you will need kitchen appliances called deep fryers. When shopping for a deep fryer ensure it has features like a cool-touch body/exterior so when you’re cooking the outside does not heat up and could cause accidental burning. It should have a lock-down lid to prevent oil from spilling over as the food is cooking. Avoid generic temperature settings like low, medium or high and go for the more specific ones. Check for thermostat controls and if possible get the kind that automatically turns off when the food is ready. Alternatively it can be fitted with an audible alarm that alerts you when the food is ready. Check if the deep fryers have ventilation systems to reduce frying disorders and oil fitters to extend the usable life of the oil.
You need to consider the quantity, size of food you will be handling and the storage space. Check if you have enough counter space for the deep fryer in your cooking area. For an electric deep fryer you will have to consider the direction of the extension cords and where the switch is to avoid tripping in the kitchen.There is nothing wrong in buying a deep fryer that is good to look at. Different Types of Deep Fryers
Electric deep fryer – This is the type that uses electricity as a source of heat. These deep fryers range from simple electric pots to the large indoor turkey fryers. They have lids that close while cooking, oil filtration systems, exteriors that don’t get hot and are best suited for indoor cooking. They are easy to move and have thermostats built in hence oil temperatures don’t have to be measured manually.
Gas deep fryer – These deep fryers are mainly used for outdoors cooking and include fish fryers, large barbecue deep fryers and turkey deep fryers. It’s powered by either natural gas or propane or both and hence it’s less expensive as compared to electricity as an energy source. These deep fryers heat up more quickly with higher temperatures than electric deep fryers.
Commercial deep fryer – They are the heaviest and are particularly designed for daily use in restaurants due to their large capacity. They have in built infiltration systems with 2 or more baskets frying more than one kind of food or multiple batches at the same time to meet the restaurants high demand for food.
Stovetop deep fryer- This is the cheapest and simplest one suitable for home use. It’s simply a metallic metal basket placed inside oil for deep frying. It’s not safe as it does not have a lid to cover it.
